Safari Overview
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is a unique island sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and lifelong care of orphaned chimpanzees in Uganda. Many of these chimpanzees, rescued from poaching and illegal wildlife trade, cannot return to the wild, making the sanctuary an essential refuge for their protection and well-being. Established in 1998, the sanctuary is located on a 100-acre rain forest island on Lake Victoria, approximately 27 kilometers southeast of Entente, offering a natural habitat rich in biodiversity and food sources for the chimpanzees. It is managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT), a non-profit collaboration of leading conservation organizations including the Born Free Foundation, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Jane Goodall Institute, Uganda Wildlife Education Center, Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda, and Uganda Wildlife Society, all committed to wildlife conservation and animal welfare. The sanctuary operates with strong environmental sustainability practices such as solar energy use, rainwater harvesting, and Eco-friendly waste management. Open year-round, it offers visitors the opportunity to observe chimpanzee feeding sessions and learn about conservation efforts, with both day visits and overnight stays available in Eco-friendly luxury tents for a truly immersive experience.
