Safari Overview
This 4-Day Aberdare Trekking trip through the Aberdare Ranges is a fascinating walk amongst the exotic flora and fauna found above 2500 metres. The views of the Rift Valley are breathtaking, and the experience is made more memorable by camping above the surrounding forests and having occasional encounters with big game such as elephants and buffalos, great bushbucks, and other antelopes.
eave Nairobi for Aberdares National Park through Mutubio or Kiandongoro Gate. We will head to Karuru Falls. Karuru Falls is the highest and tallest waterfall in Kenya—a breathtaking sight that plunges 273 metres below the viewpoint. The Falls are surrounded by tall, green indigenous trees, making it one of the most scenic places in the Aberdares. The next stop will be at the Magura waterfall and Queen’s Cave beneath it. At the base of the Magura Waterfalls lies the Queen’s Cave. The caves were thus christened after Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were served lunch here by Major Eric George Sherbrook Walkter in 1952 (just a year before her official coronation). The caves were also an asylum for the famous Mau Mau freedom fighters. Take photos to your satisfaction. The vehicle will take us to Reedbuck campsite, where dinner will be served before retiring to our tents.
Wake up for an early breakfast at 5:30 am. Leave the camp by 6:00 am for a morning game drive. This is the best time to spot the predators as they hunt for their prey. The game drives go on until about 10:30–11:00 am. As the heat of the day rises, animals take shelter in the bushes, making it hard to spot them. Head to the camp for a hot brunch.
Leave the camp for an afternoon game drive passing through Chania Falls. The trail down the showered valley is short and mildly steep. There are ropes and wooden barriers to help you navigate without much trouble. At the foot of this cascade, you can choose to remain on the higher ground and watch from a distance or go lower, into the boulder-strewn plunge pool. Take photos to your satisfaction.
Proceed with game drive until dusk when we return to the camp for dinner and overnight.
The day will start with an early breakfast before being driven to Road End. It is a popular hiking destination for adventurous travellers. From the road end, follow the marked trail towards the summit. The trail is well-marked, but it can be steep and rocky in some places. The hike usually takes about 8 hours round trip.
Once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Take some time to rest and enjoy the scenery before heading back down. The peak of the Ol Doinyo Le Satima is at an elevation of 4,001 meters (13,120 feet) above sea level. Return to Reedbuck campsite for overnight.
The day’s activities will start after breakfast by engaging in an en-route game drive. We sign out of the park and head back to Nairobi after a well-spent vacation and lifelong experience. On arrival, we drop you off at your hotel or the airport.
